Spent the morning making icon buttons square in a CSS component library. The obvious fix was aspect-ratio: 1, which quietly does nothing when the line box inside is taller than the width you computed. Ended up sizing from one line box plus the size padding instead. Most of my debugging is like this: the property was right, the box model just had other plans.
